In this post we discuss why training programmes are overrated and the value a good trainer can bring to your exercise experience.

Here’s how a typical training session starts on a Monday morning.
Me: How was your weekend?
Client: Good. I played 2 rounds of golf on Saturday and then ended up carrying my little one around most of Sunday. My back is killing me, my shoulder hurts and I’ve barely slept.
Where would you go with this?
OK we have a programme to get through so let’s crack on?
Probably not right?
Everything needs to be adapted so this person walks out feeling better than when they walked in.
That may include changing the planned exercises, or spending time on the table to investigate what’s causing these unpleasant sensations.
This isn’t a unique situation either. In my experience, no neatly designed programme survives contact with a client.
Perfect programmes don’t yield results, perfect execution does
ChatGPT can write you a decent programme, but the perfect programme – executed poorly and without regard for the context – still yields poor results.
It’s the how, not necessarily the what, that matters most. And that comes from directly observing the exercise as it’s taking place.
Whilst this is possible online, the ultimate experience occurs in 3D not 2D.
If you are considering an online personal trainer, ask how many clients they’re managing. If it’s more than 20, you’re not receiving personal training.
Every business is trying to use new technology to reach more people and make more money. But here’s the thing: in many cases, it’s the relationship that makes the difference. And that can’t be outsourced to a computer.
Try this during your next training session
So here’s a challenge for your next session: treat it as a stand-alone experience. Not part of a programme. Not in comparison to last week. And not in service of a future goal.
Approach each exercise with curiosity. Truly engage with what you feel and notice the difference subtle shifts in focus can have.
Progress is still measurable. You can look back at the numbers anytime, but go into the session without thoughts for the future or the past.
Try it and let me know what happens.
