Why resistance training is essential for everyone—not just athletes

September 22, 2025 by Paul

In this post, we discuss why resistance training is essential for everyone—not just athletes—for maintaining the life you want to live.

It’s not surprising that athletes incorporate resistance training into their programmes to help them perform at their best and avoid injury.

Even endurance athletes now embrace resistance training to remain healthy.

Whilst athletes exist on one end of the physical demand spectrum, we are all on it to some degree.

Think of all the physical tasks you perform each day—some for fun, some for work, and some in caring for others

When our bodies fail, our lives change

I read a recent article by a cardiac surgeon who was forced to abandon his profession due to disabling back pain.

He writes eloquently about the loss of identity that he found harder to deal with than the pain.

Every day I meet people who have had to adapt their lives due to limitations with their body — limitations that, in many cases, are avoidable.

Would you be surprised to learn that an athlete who didn’t train for their sport suffered with pain and injury?

Or course not. So why are we surprised when the same happens to the rest of us?

Train for the sport of life

Whilst we might not have the same physical demands as athletes, the same principles apply.

To enjoy a healthy, active life, maintaining your muscular system with regular resistance training is essential.

It’s your muscular system that allows you to make your dreams real, to turn your thoughts into physical realities.

Maintain it as best you can for the life you want to live.
