The surprising benefits of resistance training

January 19, 2024 by Paul

In this post we discuss some of the surprising benefits of resistance training.

the surprising benefits of resistance training

When we think about the benefits of resistance training we usually think about getting stronger. Regular training does so much more for you than that however.

A healthy muscular system holds the key to more than you might think.

We know your muscular system is responsible for how you move. When it’s not working particularly well movement can cause issues like nerve impingement and uneven joint wear and tear.

More recent research points to your muscular system being essential for processes in the brain and other organs however.

Myokines

The muscular system is now thought of as an endocrine organ, which means it’s responsible for the production and release of proteins called myokines.

Myokines are released when your muscles contract and influence processes both locally and throughout your body.

The biological roles of myokines include effects on cognition, lipid and glucose metabolism, browning of white fat, bone formation, endothelial cell function, hypertrophy, skin structure, and tumor growth.

So if you want to think clearer, lose body fat, have strong bones and healthy blood vessels, enjoy better skin and avoid cancer, resistance training can help.

Summary

Resistance training is not just about having stronger muscles. Keeping your muscular system healthy by training it regularly, improves processes throughout your body.

Along with what you eat, it’s essential for optimal health.
